January 2025

1st class have had a wonderful start to the new year this January. All of the girls’ were excited to return to school after Christmas! Our theme for the month was Chinese New Year & the girls really enjoyed learning all about Chinese New Years’ origins & the celebrations during this time. We loved learning about the Zodiac calendar & how each year is associated with an animal – 2025 is the year of the snake. We learned about the country of China & its people, their traditions, foods they eat & much more. For our artwork, we even designed our own Chinese lanterns using red & yellow, associated with the Chinese flag.

As Gaeilge, bhíomar ag foghlaim faoi téama bia. Bhí réimse leathan foclóir agus frásaí nua faoin téama seo ag na cailíní anois. Bhíomar ag cleactadh obair bheirte, ceisteanna agus freagraí, rannta agus ámhráin freisin bunaithe ar an téama. Bhain siad taitneamh as drámaíocht trí Ghaeilge freisin!

In maths, we explored length & area, using sticky notes to measure objects area around the classroom. We have also been looking at halves within fractions & how to share things equally – foods were a great way to visualise this! We have also moved onto tens & units, which the girls are enjoying exploring using cubes & concrete materials in maths groups.

To celebrate St. Brigid’s day, we revisited the story of St. Brigid’s cloak & had the opportunity to write about & design our own St. Brigid cloaks. We also got to make Bríd Óg crosses alongside Ms. Geraghty’s 4th class & Ms. Freeborn’s 4th class. Thank you to our wonderful helpers who made this possible for us to have & take home in time for St. Brigid’s Day!

We have also started to practise for our play in March, which is hugely exciting! We currently are rehearsing our songs for the play & we are looking forward to choreographing dances & getting into role as our characters alongside Ms. Feeney’s 1st class. We are excited for the rest of term 2!
